Chevy books say to use oil on threads not sealant on a gen VI 502.
Pulled heads off and GM used sealant
What should be used?????
Holes are not open to water jackets.

First off pop for a set of ARP head bolts. They are not that much. Then use their assembly paste and follow their torque specs. Read up on this here;

I have re used my head bolts in my Gen VI motors 3 times now....last time when I switched to wold products heads. I had to put spacers under them to fit, and lubed everything with 30 wt oil....but all is still fine. I have since found out however that those bolts are not designed to be re used since they are a "stretch to yeild" type of bolt. I've had no problem YET....but am starting to get concerned after reading this forum.... Glenn

It's better to use the assembly lube rather than oil on blind tapped head bolts.
It's possible to "hydrolock"(compress oil in the hole) the bolt which will give you a false torque reading.
Because the holes are blind sealant is not needed. The assembly lube will give a more accurate torque reading.

I did use the ARP washers as spacers below them(even though I did'nt like the idea of doing it) ...and although I used a very light coat of oil on the threads I did use assembly lube on the washers and below the bolt heads. Maybe thats what saved me cause things are still Ok after running this week.
