A question about camshaft assembly lube?
I bought some ARP engine assembly lube (part no. 100-9902)
from Summit Racing, they had it advertized as a camshaft lube. It is a very thick and pasty grey goo, nothing like the red slimy stuff that I normally use.
I went ahead and used it on the cam and lifters and distributor gear and the engine is totally assembled but has not been fired yet.
Last night I talked to an engine builder and he said DO NOT USE THAT STUFF ON A CAM AND LIFTERS. he says it is way too thick.
Has anyone used this particular product for this purpose? Should I leave it alone or tear it all back apart and use a different lube?

I've been told and heard not to use cam lube on roller lifters. I think this was mentioned in my Crane installation instructions.
I just use plain 'ol oil and prime real good before firing up.

As infomanic mentioned, keep the rpms up to break it in. Very important on initial run

I second that. The two most important items are that you used the assembly lube and that you need to bring the RPM up during the initial firing. Don't just fire it up and play with it.

The trick is to use the thick stuff on the lobes of the cam and on the flats of the lifters but do not get it on the sides of the lifters because it can stop them from spining like they are sapposed to. Use regular motor oil on the sides of the lifters and on the bearing surfaces of the cam.
