Powder coating vs. Painting lower units, gimbles and K - planes...
I am pretty sure I am going to use the current people that I have been working with "thru" CPR, but I am just curious what others have paid. This winter I would like to have drive units, and K planes painted, I have a friend that will do it for me but am a little nervous about that. What kind of prices has everyone paid? What experiences has everyone had?
I just wish Too Old would move back to the midwest, then he could be my mechanic....

One of the guys on the board does powder coating which seems to be the trick and not any more expensive that imron and such. I have his card at home and will try to find it. I bought stuff from him and was happy.

Yes we were,,, about 3 weeks ago or so...
That was the boats mayden voyage. Cruised around for awhile and then headed to the cove to see what was going on.

I have had limited luck even with powder coat. You just have to take your time and prep it correctly. I am going to try TooOlds stuff next time I have to do the drives.

Powder Coat
I just finished a winter/spring project. I painted the drives myself but had the tabs, intake manifolds and some engine brackets powdercoated. What I found was it is critical to find someone experienced with Auto/marine equipment. The guy I used (Top Koat, Texas) was very thorough and went through each step of the process with me. They do primarily hot rod parts. The prep work for powder is every bit as critical as with paint. But the powder on the intake holds up great to fuel spills etc and seems to me to be somewhat tougher than the paint I used (BASF single stage). Just as Too Old said though, everything has to be disassembled due to the approx 400 degree bake temp during the finish process.
