I think you should be around 4800 to 5000 rpms with that motor.

I would shoot for 5000rpm with the mag engine. Try a 21" pitch mirage prop then go from there. That is assuming you are running a four blade prop now.

Like Bt said, pitch down to at least a 21", and maybe even a 19". You need to get your rpm's up to 5000. Only running 4200 is putting a big load on the engine.
Nose cones are only needed at 80+mph. A K&N will look nice, but won't give you any increase that you'll see on the speedo.

I been working on my 28 for 3 years now. I have tried over a dozen props on that boat. What i can tell you is that most people out there that own this boat are running the wrong prop. The conventional props that everyone will recommend wont work right. This boat likes 4 blade small diameter props. bravo one , hydro-motive props will produce to much stern lift and make the bow of the boat nose dive . This hull needs a prop that will help lift the bow up so that it can utilizes the pad on the bottom of the hull to lift the stern. When this is achieved the hulls slip factor will be dramatically reduces and you will gain a bit or speed. This 28 scarab measures around 29' 5" It is a long boat for a single engine. It is a great rough water hull with the correct prop. I used a bravo 1 for a while and I thought I was going to stuff the boat a few times. But I am also running almost 600 hp and in the mid 70s. I hope to be close to 80 when I get this new engine dialed in. I know of people with simular HP and they are not running this fast. Its all in the prop.

I would look for a 21P 4 blade. I would try a prop for a out board something That is made for a bass boat. I might sound totally off the wall but thats what i am running. These props are smaller diameter and made for boats with a pad button. When I get to the marina in a few days I will see what model prop I have. I know it is a merc and that they dont make it any more.

If I can help you in any way don't hesitate to ask.

Paul

If thats the type of prop, the boat needs then a Mach Sterndriver could be the answer. I think they are only about 13 1/2 " diameter.

I have a pig as well my quest. was in the technical sect. I found an old issue of Hot Boat July 2001 there was a 28 excel in there with a 7.4 330 that did 60.1 mph on gps with stainless marine exh. I called him to inquire on props he switched to a stock 502 Mag. and got it to 64 my pig was up to 67. I also had an '87 exel comparable motor to the one I have now that only did 66 I'm pulling what little hair I have left trying to find the right setup.

some aftermarket exhaust manifolds will help in the bottom to mid range for torque, that is something that will help out, as far as props you might try Teague they have a prop program where you can try them out and keep the ones you like, they use to have some of the last Mach props like Griff was talking about
