Wow, 513 horsepower from a 454 is really good! Those heads and camshaft must really work well with that high compression ratio.
If you can run 11.0:1 compression with 36 degrees total advance on premium pump gas without detonation that set up is great!
36 degrees advance says a lot about the good combustion chamber design in the heads and the domes on the pistons.
Thanks for sharing that with us!

I ran the numbers and at 5500 rpms with a 1.5 gear ratio at 75mph with a 25P you have a 13% slip factor. Mathematically you are there. My 24 outlaw has an upgraded HP 500 in it and with a 23p reworked to a 24p at 5300 rpms it runs 73.5 on GPS. If your run more power your going to have to upgrade the drive and you should also add hydraulic steering. I am in the process of having my hull blueprinted and after this I'm all done. I know I will never be the fastest guy on the lake, there are more effecient hulls out there and with the same power will run 10mph faster.
When too much is not enough, more is better, and excessive is just right!

I'd bet that if that engine was run on a dyno it would be making over 500 hp. I've done 468 engines with slightly less cam (flat-tappet) and slightly less compression (9.65:1) that dyno'd at a touch over 500 at 5400 rpm. If you don't believe it you can ask KAAMA. He was there at the dyno run. And it was at Tom Earhart's shop.

Interesting thread! Personally, I think a 236*/244* hyd roller is a little too large for a 468" engine. I've got a 236*/244* in my 540's!!! I was actually going to put a slightly smaller cam in my 540's.
I'd be willing to bet that a smaller cam would give your engine more of a kick in the pants. You don't really want to go over 5600rpm's anyway with a hydraulic cam.

I might agree, KAAMA, but I think it would be neat to see what it would spin on the dyno. Then change the cam to a shorter grind, and spin it again to compare results.

The engine was ran on the dyno and it made 513hp, he states that in his update post. I would also agree with 24ftbaja that it needs a bit more cam or a slight profile change but would push the rpm range up and make the engine less reliable. 513hp out of a mild 468 is great power.

I agree, and I would be happy enough with 513hp out of a 468 with a hyd. roller---that is very good! I'm sure the 11:1 comp ratio helps those numbers out quite a bit. I just wonder (for comparison) what kind of power the engine would make on the same dyno using a smaller cam------------but then of course that takes more time/$$$.
I would also be interested in knowing what RPM a 468" engine idles at in neutral and in gear with a cam that size (236*/244*). I would think it might be a little "snotty" for shifting and manuvering around the docks. But then I'm 45 years old now and I like a smoother idling engine these days---that's just me.

KAAMA, it was good to see you in Grand Haven last night. Sorry I didn't get a chance to see you running the boat, but there's always today, if we're around Grand Haven. Oh, Barb just pointed out that I DID get to see your boat. As you blew past me on U.S.31 with that big turbo-powered Cummins diesel Dodge
