Are these heads any good. Casting # 10114158
i'm going to be reworking my 84 330 this summer. I know the 049 castings are pretty good heads and workable to get 500hp.
I have Oval ports on my motor but their 10114158 castings.
Are these heads any good?
Are they worth working and keeping or should I just buy a set of Merlins?
I'm looking for 450 to 500 reliable hp?
I plan on Stock crank and rods, forged pistons, ARP bolts, balanced assembly, I have Stainless Marine Big Block High Torque III Manifolds, and a Edelbrock Air Gap
Either working my heads or Merlins? Haven't decided on a cam yet.
Thanks Rob

I did a double take when I first looked at the number because I thought it was a 6. But after looking closer it really seems to be a 8. The motor is in a 84 monza. As far as I know and from what the previous owner told me the motor was susposed to be stock.

They have got to be peanut port heads. I cant even find a 158 head, must be 156. http://www.mortec.com/bbc.htm

Use the cast crank and stock 3/8 bolt rods (the rods are forged steel), rpm is the killer, not the amount of horsepower. If you run at less than 5,250 rpm (oval port heads), keep it from detonating, and don't hold it wide open for a long time you will be just fine.
My opinion,
