Hi,
Left water in the fresh water tank for ~1 month. Used the sink today and the water has an odor. What can be used to clean the system out? Are there any chemicals which are "safe" to use in the tank and still be able to wash your hands with the water?

A small amount of bleach, one cup to 20 gallons Will kill any bacteria and should not harm the system.
If by chance you have hot water and it smells like rotten eggs it is most likely the sacrificial anode mounted inside the HW tank.

The bleach trick will work, but I think 8oz to 20gal is a bit much. I'd try a lesser amount.
For future use look into an additive for the water tank. West Marine sells several different types of purifying or freshening additives.
