Default Hydraulic helm question

My boat has an charlynn 120 cc hyd helm unit. It turns 3.5 turns lock to lock. The problem is when I turn the wheel fast like trying to drive when the boat chine walks I can turn faster than the wheel will turn easily. in other words it turns freely about 1/8 turn or so then it gets real hard to turn at the same rate of speed as well as making a gushing sounds at all speeds. Imco says the power steering pump might not have enough volume to supply the helm (worn out)? I used the same pump on a single WPM ram and didnt have any of this and I could drive like wild and the wheel responded quickly and rapidly as well as being much queiter. Imco also said I could go to a 160 cc helm unit ( 2.5 turns Lock to Lock)and may work better if the pump is not worn out? Does anybody recognize any of these things? Help! Greg

Hey greg, I wish I knew the answer. Like I told you at LOTO my friend had the same problem and I think he has it working better now after countless times of bleeding air out of the system. There has to be a better way. Someone help out here Please!

Greg it was great meeting you out on the water, until the idiot dislogged our anchors and we started to float away. Boy that guy in the pontoon was pissed.

There is a restrictor orifice in the stock power steering pump. I believe if you remove it it will help.

There was a thread about this a while back.

As far as I know, you can't remove the restrictor in the pump. But, you can drill it out a bit. However, I don't know that is your problem. I have been meaning to drill mine out a bit because my steering is a litttle difficult to turn at idle.

Are you running a Imco steering filter? If so by-pass it, and see if it makes a difference.

Dual ram steering? If so, you will need to add an oil reservoir to the pancake pump to assist in proper operation. While the flow may be OK, it runs out of oil rather quickly.

Scott B

Dual ram Latham, no reservoir

You need to drill the pump orifice to 11/64......
It is just a GM auto pump......nothing fancy !!!!!
run a resovoir. It plumbs in the top of the pump....you can buy a cap from CP to do this without welding
