On another thread we were just talking about a guy in my area who has a 28' Checkmate with a single 588 cubic incher making roughly 800hp and he only has a standard Bravo One and it has SEVERAL HUNDRED hours on it and no issues!---Pretty impressive! Mr.Gadgets has just taken it apart and gone through it about 2 months ago just to be safe. Perhaps he can chime in here too.

It has a lot to do with the way you drive. I know of several big power, high X demension tunnels with 100+ hrs on XZ drives. These boats are run HARD for long periods. The in and out of the water is what KILLS any drive including XR's.

I have a 26 Carrera with a 900HP motor that has 60 trouble free hours on a standard bravo top (hard prop/vertical shafts) Drive oil looks perfect. Go hammer it in rough water and it wouldn't last 10 min.

Mark,
I believe Mr. Gadgets has XR gears in the upper on his drives.
As far as speed difference I A/B tested a stock B1 and then a XR upper/Stock lower combo and did not see any change in speed.

I lost the port side outdrive on my boat over the 4th of July weekend. I have the XZ drives stock from the factory with 500 EFI's. The problem with mine seems to be that the clutch tried to lock up and ended up locking up the entire drive.
It had 130 hours of use and was well maintained, and 2 weeks out of warranty. Mercury was VERY nice and sent me a brand new drive at no charge.
Mercury also mentioned that the XZ has been discontinued, that they are going to standardize on just one drive and that will be the XR.
I did confirm with them that the ONLY difference between the two was the gears.
XR = Straight Cut Gears (Good for up to 575 SC Merc)
XZ = Spiral Cut Gears (Good for up to 500 EFI)
They are both good drives, too much horsepower will kill any of them.

Dock, bearing didn't go first. Looks like the top cap broke from side loading. Be sure to go with billet top caps.
11,500# MTI/Scism cat with 575SCi's turned up to 675-700hp. XR's never lasted over 20 hours. Boat is now running BMaxes. Lost a carrier bearing at Cumberland this weekend. That boat runs a high X and is heavy. Is babied on acceleration, and great care is taken to only run full power when the boat is in the water.
Just goes to show that weight and high X-dims are factors that work against a drive's lifespan.
Surface drives make the most sense on a big boat like that...

The drive oil was first changed at 20 hours and then every 30 to 40 hours. It had been changed four times and all looked good.
