If you still need the Merlin # I can find them also.
I had a zip file with hundreds of cam, head, and .dyn #s for DD 2000 including some marine cam profiles, Ill see if I can find them.
Hope this helps
Bob

The link listed in the second post gives plenty of data for heads. They just don`t have any data for the L29 Vortec heads. Most people I`ve spoke with tell me to use numbers in between the 049 heads and Merlins.
It would read something like this:

VALVE LIFT INT EXH

.100 65 51
.200 135 99
.300 197 128
.400 238 153
.500 259 171
.600 272 179

Guess I answered by own question...

Pat, Im running ZZ502's in my boat, and I tried to build these motors on desktop dyno, but GM doesnt give enough info on the cams to get a accurate #. Crane gives you all the open and close degree info which is more accurate for the program. I plan on rebuilds this winter with cam upgrades, so if you want to buy the ZZ cams and lifters let me know.

DonMan, I haven't been on for a while, but just read about you scattering your 454. I put a Vortec 454 long block in my boat over the winter - it was one piece rear main seal, roller hydraulic unit, late model truck take out - got it off one of my Buds, and I think he has another one. I put a B&M 177 blower on mine, with a Predator on top of that - all I can say is it is a torque monster!!! If Ken still has the other one, I gave him $1400 for mine, pulled a couple of caps & it didn't look like it had been run, and the cylinders still had visible crosshatch below the pistons, and no carbon, very little suit in exhaust ports - Just a thought. Also, those Vortec 454 heads are closed chamber and build compression with flat top pistons (~100CC chambers, I have been told) I am being awful careful on the spark advance and liberal on the octane with my blower (8# max boost) but I was very impressed with the condition of this and the other motor he had (has?) Let me know if you want me to check into it for you - easiest to contact me [email protected] because I don't look at this very often -

Be careful with a blower on a L-29. I have been told that the heart shaped chamber will burn up pistons with the extra boost.
Whipple took their package for these engines off the market...

Ok -Title this experience is the best teacher, or maybe unlimited lessons from a limited check book! L-29's and blowers didn't mix. At least none of the shrapnel went through the hull! After I put it back together, I put a tunnel ram and two Holley's on - that worked a little better - but suffered from fuel delivery and high speed lean conditions (not conducive to longevity either). At least none of the shrapnel went through the hull! Now, on my third L-29 (This lesson is getting expensive, so read carefully) ( I probably should be punished for what I have done to so much beautiful big block metal) I am running a BG demon 850 on a sungle plane Holley manifold with the ZZ502 cam (I would recommend the ZZ cam to anyone running rollers just for the sound alone!) but it makes such beautiful TORQUE, with outrageous amounts of midrange to 5500 RUSH! I have it on a Berkley 12JE Pump with a 2A impeller. According to Berkley's charts for the 2A impeller, twisting it to 5500 RPM is making 550+ ponies (the chart ends, but if you extend the lines, it would be at or above where 600 line should be on the graph. According to Berkley, this is a relatively good approximate dyno, as the pump loads the same running 80 or tied up to the dock. This is NET, running alternator, K&N Filter (sitting on an 8" tall velocity stack), and baffle plates in the headers! Minor port matching of the manifold to heads, 1 1/4" aluminum spacer under the carb, with 1/2" phenolic between that and the manifold. Wow, why didn't I just use this old tried and true recommended set up on the L29 headed Gen VI in the first place?
BTW, Ignition is mallory billet distributor, Mallory digital 6A box, Promaster coil, static timing at 14 BTC. Pump 91 octane and no rattles. I have also added a set of roller rockers, (just because they were there). It will probably take me the rest of my life to get my VISA card paid off!

The 049 heads are a big block Chevy GM large oval port head. It was produced by GM from about the early 70's to about the 1981 or so. It's a very good head design---especially because it could be modified with larger valves and some bowl/pocket porting. I knew of a few guys who had the Merc 330hp engines with the 049 head and did these mods heads back in the mid 1980's with really good results.
