I've purchased a set of k-planes I plan to install on my boat but don't have any pumps.What I'm wondering is will merc tilt/trim pumps work or do I need Kiekahfer pumps.

You can use standard trim pumps. Coincidently we have them brand new for $345 each.

Thanks for the info,I already have a source for pumps.I could use 1 of the old style 2 piece k plane rams though.

Wow been awhile but I seem to remember getting off on the wrong foot in a thread much like this one. A trim pump puts out 2200-2600 psi on the up circuit and 400-600 on the down circuit.The k plane pumps put out 1900 psi on the down circuit and 800 on the up on the sport pump and 3600 on the down 2000 on the up circuit on the competition pump.so the closest you can do if you are going to use the trim pump is to use the up circuit for the trim tab down and down on the trim pump for the tab up.You can also get the gages and take the time to reset the relief valves to bring the numbers to more where the should be in my humble opinion. Also for anyone doing this I think I would make sure my rams can hold the pressure as I think rams like Bennett only go to 500psi working pressure.

Looks like I need to do a little more research.I'm using k-plane rams so that's not a problem,just need pumps.

Is it still possible to get seal kits for the old 2 piece rams? Mine don't leak,but a reseal and paintjob would not hurt !

Magnum So did you get the pumps up and running.I was in the shop today playing around with one of my extra trim pumps and found that if I backed off the up curcit spring retainer 3/4 of a turn it was real close to the 1900 psi in which the sport k plane pump calls for.I called Mer. and am waiting for there answer on the ram pressures but he did say that there were three different rams. Don't know if it helps any.

The K-plane oil pump gears are half the size of the drive pump gears. So the k-plane pump puts out less volume than the drive pump. I have drive pumps on my Sutphen F1-50. The k-planes re-act faster. twice the speed of the k-plane pump. they dont make kits for the 2 piece rams anymore. They sell a whole 1 piece rams in place.

Don't think of up & down, think high pressure side & low pressure side. The blue wire always runs the pump for high pressure. HP is used on the tabs to extend the cylinder (down) and on a drive it is up.
