I agree. Fuel is the cheapest part of offshore performance boating---why skimp?

I use the KE units with a 180 stat. Once up to temp, and runnin the temp stays at 210-215. During long periods of hard running, the temp goes up to 225, but comes right back down when we slow down. Best $$$ I've spent on the engines. NEVER any sludgy crap under the valve covers, or anywhere in the engine.
Also, it takes about 185-190 degrees of temp to evaporate all the contaminating factors in the oil such as condensation during cold starts, fuel, from over rich conditions as experienced by most blower aplications, and most of all the lubricating qualities of the oil increases as the temp reaches the 200 mark.

I have the KE Thermofilters as well. They are the HP-6 (large) size units, and have the 212* oil thermostats. For water thermostats I use a 160* stat. These are used in conjunction with some very large oil coolers I have. The oil coolers I have are actually some pretty nice coolers. Until I took the coolers apart for inspection and cleaning, I didn't realize that on my particular coolers that there are a couple of channels that the oil flows through that allows for extra cooling before being discharged out the fitting.

My first intent is I want to try and keep the oil as warm as I can during long idling periods, but once the boat is on plane and the engine oil needs/demands more cooling, I want to make sure the engine oil is getting all the cooling it requires---hence the large oil coolers.

Is anyone using the KE unit without the filter attachment?? I did not have any good luck with my unit. Too long to heat up and too hot on hard runs.. Took it out and it oil temps are much better, but still takes too long to warm up. I have disasembled it and check the stat in boiling water.. opens at 190 as it should. But it just didnt work in the boat.. Plumbing was as the instruction sheet showed.. ????

Thanks
Dick

Dick/Mr.Gadgets,

I didn't know KE made a different type of oil thermostat other than their "Thermofilter" that they sell. Anyway, the model you have sure doesn't sound like it's working correctly. Maybe they will take it back for one of their Thermofilters. (???)

Some mid-90"s KE remote thermostats had an issues with tight tolerances. This caused the unit to not open and close at the designed temps. If yours is a 8-10 year old unit, I would start over. When corrected, my two KE units worked flawlessly for years.

I'm running the remote KE oil thermostat with no problems. It sure cleared up the milky stuff under the valve covers.

Please PM me if anyone is interested in (2) Permacool 180 degree oil thermostats complete with 1/2" NPT hose barbs. I used them for 1 season and sold the boat. $40 gets both.
