Checking timing by the base timing is not as important as what your total advance is. Base timing can be different with different applications due to the amount of advance that is in your distributor. Base timing + distributor advance = Total advance which should be about 32 to 34 degrees. Of course you will need a good timing light with the advance feature to check this. Just punch in 32 degrees in the light and set the marks to zero when the distributor is at full advance.

Cool

Which cam did you use? With a large cam and stock compression you may have to go as high as 18degrees at idle to keep from fouling the plugs.

You friend should spend a little more money and get rid of the comp cams crap. I've had nothing but trouble with their stuff and know others that have had similar problems in cars and boats. In my car I had a cam lobe wipe out after 250mi. In the boat I used one of their matched kits cam, springs, push rods, timing chain ect.. In one season had a spring break and drop a valve when the motors were torn down there were 4 broken springs on each motor and they knew they were going in a boat that would be run hard for long periods. On the rebuild the only comp part I reused were the chains because they almost never go bad and at the end of this season the timing gear on crank broke into 9 pieces. My machinist said in 30 years he never saw a similar failure. I WILL NEVER USE ANYTHING FROM COMP CAMS AGAIN!!!!
