I have a post on 454 build-up, and have gotten some great info. Ive got the build figured for performance and durability , but I can not seem to find the perfect cam. The boat is a 20ft bow-rider, Deep V. Fairly heavy (dont know weight). I guess more than anything I would like a killer hole-shot. Last year did 65mph with stock 330hp. Top speed isnt bad, but didnt come out of the hole that great. Also didnt have that midrange pull needed for accelerating out of a hard turn. Any cam specs. for this powerband would be great. I should say the engine now has large oval port heads, 9.5-1 comp. ratio, Edelbrock RPM AIR-GAP manifold and Revolution Marine exhaust Thanks. JW454.

Use the Merc 420 hp cam. Check www.cranecams.com. It's a hydraulic flat tappet. A roller will make a few more hp but will cost about 600.00 more. Not worth it. As it is you will have to change to roller rockers and different springs, retainers.

jw454, I think you will find the cam I used to be VERY close to the Merc 420 cam. That was the 224 232 cam Crazyhorse and I used.

As for hole shot and handling (corners, etc...), what prop are you running? If you haven't tried a 4 blade, you owe it to yourself to try one. Find one, borrow one, whatever..... for base comparison, if your using a say a Mirage 3 blade, try a Merc Bravo One, one pitch smaller than your 3 blade.

I went from a 3 blade to a four blade on my Outlaw and couldn't believe how much better it handled. I have a raised x dimension and that makes a difference, but the difference is night and day between the 3 blade and 4 blade.
