I am with Bob on this one. I had seen that same auction on E-Bay. Looks a little shady to me. I noticed the covers and alternator as well. Also, it may just be a bad picture but the motor and pulleys just don't seem to be the right color. I would ask for more pictures with one that shows the engine serial # as well. I still wouldn't buy the motor without seeing it first. Maybe I am just too cautious after being screwed on an HP500 last year. I wont ever buy a motor without seeing it again.

I have a HP500EFI top end for sale, plenum, heads, ECU and cam in the OSO classifieds.

So is there any debate whatsoever that a new 496HO would be as strong or stronger than a tired HP 500 carb?

I think it would have to be pretty darn tired.

i think the 496 mag HO would be the way to go. alot of good features with it, including the warranty. there are some aftermarket reprogramming you can do and they are very strong engines. i've heard only 2-3 mph difference between it and the 500 hp ... and the price i think is close to 10K more for the 500 hp. personally more bang for the buck to me ..

Default 525

Your gonna cry if it runs 60 with the 496.
As someone else said the 496/425 is probably
closer to 400hp. The 525/500 is probably 515pshp.
Stock merc over estimates, merc racing under estimates. JC

The chief mechanic for one of the big offshore race teams is someone I know. They were asked my Merc. to do testing on the original 500 EFI's -- and have several ( I think 12 ) that they've brought up to 600 hp EFI's. Around 12k (or 15k -- can't remember) each -- w/ warranty. If you're interested in talking with him, e-mail or call me and I'll put you in touch.

Oh, btw, they say, there's no reason to pay the extra for the 525's if you're willing to buy one of these 600 EFI's. They also make them w/ the same closed cooling,
