The 496 is a great motor but if you go from a hp500, you will slow down. I would buy a used 500efi, use a merc scan tool to see how it was run, and save a few $$. If you are in salt water go with the 525 hands down.
Oh by the way i have 300 hrs on my 500efi and love it

The 496HO is a reliable 425hp package, but it does not put out he 500 to 525 the 500efi does. Torque on both is close but the 496HO makes more down lower in rpms. No one can tweek the computor only on the 496HO and get 500HP, the heads and manifold need a minimum of $3,000 of CNC work and a cam change will get the 496HO to 500hp but thats it. The iron heads are capped out. Thats why we developed new aluminum heads which we will start delivering in March. I am sure several builders are going to use these with new forged pistons from Mahle and a good cam to make 600HP+ 496-515 cu-inch efi motors commonplace. Our new "Bigpower"Manifold which hits the water in April or Arizona Speed & Marine monster $$$ manifold ,coupled with this engines features will make these the top efi motors everywhere hulls go fast!
