330 on steroids?
About a year ago I read an article on building up 330hp engines. The thread is gone now and I need the info. Does anyone have the cam specs or the whole thread? I have a buddy that has a set of cams and lifters from twin 1990, 502 465 hp engines, never run and free, would these cams do? I think the cams are either .485 or .510 lift with 224 duration at 114 cl. Andy...

My cams are .552 int lift .578 exh [email protected], lobe center is 112....int duration is 234 exh duration is 242.

dyno: who is your cam mfg and do you have a part number? On an engine that makes 400 to 475 hp is there a noticable gain in speed when you swich to cast perf exhaust manifolds over iron center risers?

The Federal Mogul catalog lists a flat-tappet hydraulic 502 camshaft, WS1047M, 390/400 horse, that is 224/224 [email protected], .510/.510 lift. The stock 330 cam is listed as WS1093M, 214/218 [email protected], .461/.479 lift. Both cams have 115 degree LSA, and 64 degrees, 62 degrees overlap respectively. I think those cams would run very nice in your engines, especially for the price. You could really wake up your 330 engines if you could get the compression ratio up a bit from the factory 7.8:1.

V-8007R intake valves, 2.19 dia.
V-8006R exhaust valves, 1.90 dia.
Merlin oval-port heads, Performer intakes, Holley carburation
Dyno's engines have H693CP+.030 hypereutectic pistons, 9.5:1. All other components are as listed above, including cams.
Waterfoul's engine has H426CP+ .060 hypereutectics, 8.6:1 and a slightly smaller cam, CS1139R, 224/[email protected], .527/.553 lift, GM rectangular-port heads, GM aluminum intake, Holley carb, all other components are the same.
BGIII's engine also has H426CP hypereutectics, he used an Ultradyne cam(virtually the same #'s as the CS1139R), GM rectangle-port heads, GM aluminum intake, Q-jet carb. All other components as listed.

I also use the same cams as Waterfoul. Edelbrock lists that same cam as the torker 2 cam. Remember, cam and compression have to match, if you go too much cam without raising the compression you will lose power. There are lots of other factors too.

There have been untold numbers of threads on turning up the 330 engines and every one of them has had lots of advice and opinions. Just remember, if you're trying to do this on a budget you can do very well with all the basic stock 330 components if you stay within their limitations. Cast cranks, 330 rods, even two-bolt-main blocks work just fine if you're shooting for the 500 to 550 horsepower range.
Another thing to remember, man-made stuff sometimes blows itself to pieces, no matter how well you did everything.
