Default XR Input Shaft Seal

Just had one go with less then 50 hours on XR Drive. Lucky I had read some post about part number 11-841026A2 (Replacement seal). So I ordered a seal for drive (verbally) and did not specify part number thinking I would get the new style. They sent me the old part number.

1. Anybody had problems with the new seal?
2. What is torque specs for input gear nut on rear?
3. Is Mercury still selling the old version or did I just get old stock?
4. If pressure is blowing seals out into the shaft and you pressure check the drives at 15 psi, how much pressure will the seals hold before they slide into the gear face?

Marc, help me out here! And yes, I should have just ordered it from you instead of going locally! I will call you Tuesday with a order for a spare!!!

A a special thanks to all those who posted on the old link on this subject. It saved me about $300 and a lot of frustration.

Ed, did you order a 11-841026A2 (seal & retainer kit) or just the replacement seal? If you got the kit you are good to go.

Sometimes it does not make sense to order long distance. Shipping can eat up any savings on small items.

862118A-2 is what I got. It is in the first picture with the box in background and is the kit. I verbally said I wanted the Kit for the XR, new style seal, and that is what I got. It is the part number listed by Mercury on the parts list and does not reflect the new part number provided by you on one of your earlier posts that originally alerted me to the probable cause of the disappearing drive oil. Found out that Mercury had not updated the parts list after I got part. Thanks and what about the torque specs on that nut, it was not inch pounds when I took it off.

Ed, what was that earlier part number? I will double check. The torque on the retainewr is 200 ft lbs. The nut that holds the gear is tightened to produce 6-10 in lbs rolling torque on the double bearing.

You need the updated seal retainer from Merc or the new seal will just creep out again and contact the knuckle and burn up. The new carrier has a small lip that keeps the seal in place. Look at my old seal!!

edb07, I wouldn't use the one you received. It is probably old stock. I bought one of the first ones from Marc that had the problem, but nobody knew there was a problem, well other than Mercury.
Marc replaced mine 2 times and it started leaking after 4-5- hours running time. Then we found out that Merc had a replacement and that fixed the problem.
I don't think you can make the seal fail with a vacuum or pressure test. It must have something to do with vibration and oil pressure. It only has to move .005 - .010 inch and then it rubs on the yoke, gets hot and falls apart.

Thanks Marc for all of your help!
