Replacing Valve Springs
I need some advice; I am replacing my valve springs in my HP500's with Comp 929-16 springs. I believe those are what came in my motors? Can I use the same Retainers and Valve locks? Would you replace the roller lifters? They do have a shinny line down the middle of the roller. Any input would be welcomed...I'm new to the high performance boating. The motors have around 300hrs of use in fresh water.

Thats what I have been told from several mechanics including the folks at merc. I am having mine done currently and am using the crane springs and keepers. Haven't heard anything about the lifters, hard to believe they would be bad unless the springs were very weak.

Replace...I just did the same. Only had 30 hours on my old springs. You have so much invested, locks & retainers why not. I did it for peace of mind. I 've just had such bad luck why wonder for another $70 odd. Comp springs have good reputation, my last set were the new style Cranes. Lifters should be okay. You can easily rebuild your Rocker arms yourself or send em back to Crane for refurbishment

A tip for checking the condition of roller lifters. Get a piece of polished granite or marble, hold the lifter firmly in your hand and run it across surface of the the stone. With a little practice you will know very quickly if you have one going bad.
