525SC Pulley Shaft
Anyone ever snap the pulley shaft on a Merc 525SC?
Was running my boat this weekend when I started to lose boost then power - shut it down and found the pulley and belt in the bilge.... the pulley still had part of the shaft attached to it - broke off flush with the end of the pulley..... anyone ever have this happen? Is there a history of this w/ the 525?
Motor is a 1998 with 208 hours on it.

I've got 335hrs on my 525sc and had no problems with the SC.
I change the lube in it every 30 or so hrs and use the Merc HP gear lube. I have never heard of this happening.
Sounds like it might have run out of gear lube.

thanks Griff - actually we checked the lube level and it was fine - right now it looks as if the bolt on the pulley may have been torqued down too much when the aftermarket pulley was installed - more than likely this caused the shaft to weaken and crack....

I MUST SAY I BUILD MANY OF THESE ENGINES AND I HAD NEVER SEEN OR HEARD OF THAT. ONE THING I WOULD LOOK AT TO MAKE SURE IT WAS A PARTS FAILURE AND NOT SOMETHING BROUGHT ON FROM LACK OF MAINTENANCE WOULD BE THE CONDITION OF THE BEARINGS BEFORE YOU PUT IT BACK TOGETHER IF THE BEARING WAS DAMAGED YOU MAY NOT HAVE HAD THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF OIL OR DIRTY OIL IN IT. I USE LUCAS OIL EXCLUSIVELY ON MY BLOWER DRIVES. HOPE THAT WILL HELP LAZ MESA WWW.MESABALANCING.COM
