I originally wanted the Excursion, but I had a hard time paying 40k for a vehicle that wouldn't fit in my garage. At the time I only had a 23' Rinker so I went with the 5.4l Expedition. I got the Fountain and wished I would have gone for the Excursion. I'm guessing that I'm towing around 7500# wet. Wished it would go better, stop better, handle better.
Congrats on your purchase. It should pull just fine for you. I think the 4:10 gears might be a little overkill though. Makes for some high revs on the freeway. Might have to leave it in overdrive.

Good for you Mack 312 !!! Iv'e always been a GM guy { still own 2 GM trucks} @ if you don't want the diesel, the 496 is the toughest motor out there. I own a P.S. Super Duty @ would'nt trade it for anything! but if you don't tow alot. maybe not the best Idea to live with a diesel.

Had a Suburban with the 454 and Just bought an Excursion with the PS Diesel and a chip. Awsome power and the brakes are better than the Suburban. Make sure you have a set of air bags added to whatever you buy. The fiancee likes to drive it too my .02 Spine Tickler

Just bought a F350
used with some miles on it
I have a 30' baja 280 ES about 10500 on trailer
(heavy ass ride)
I figured ill move up in time as we ALL want to so get a big truck now and not have to upgrade truck and boat at same time

Might move to a f350 Dually 4x4 instead of regular 4x4 f350 in 2 more years after Trans Am is paid off

Im liking the 2000-2002 F350 dually's Really sharp, nice ride, comfortable seats and that diesel is just unreal
best part NO EMISSIONS (pa emissions has gone way up in price- 90 bucks = 2 bucks for sticker)
Im happier with my ford than with my old 87 Chevy pickup (ride better, suspension softer, 4x4 not as noisy)
bad side to this
9 mpg with that gas sucking whore 460 in her
dual tanks and I get 250 miles to both tanks of gas
Ha! and I thought the boat was bad on gas this truck is worst, Boat is twins!!!

Just got home with it from Chicago. Had to go all that way to get the one we wanted!!!What a ride. It does have air ride and air road levelers with all internall pumps. With the 4:10's it goes like hell to about 80! Stopped when we got down to a half a tank.....10.17 MPG ....That will take some getting use tooooooo. What a great ride for a 3/4 ton. All the air stuff and Auto-Ride makes a great deal of difference!

Again thanks to all! Great info from our OSO members!

Yesterday I brought home a 2001
F250 4x4 PSDiesel XLT, SCab loaded up nice.
1st thing I did was come home and hitch up the Donzi, I am about 8000lbs on a full bag a gas, do not even know it is there, I drove around all afternoon with the boat in tow.
I will pay for her tomorrow. This thread has been a wealth of LIVED knowledge...
Thanks
Bryan

Mack312,

Sorry to hear that you already purchased a New Suburban, I could have given you some of my experienced advise. I at least hope you got the $45K price tag down to $37-38K, if not I would have bought used. Check out the NADA or Kelly Blue Book on a 2001, you will be sick try $28-30K oh and if you Ford owners think you have it any better try $25-27K for a 2001 Excursion. Now I am not talking bull here I had a 2001 2500 4x4 8.1 Suburban loaded that I just sold to purchase a 2002 2500 4x4 Avalanche, so I can tell you all about the resale. The new car dealers are killing resale values with the discounts, rebates, and low or no interest rates. After all who wants to buy a used car/truck when you can get a new one cheaper. The 2500 8.1 will work fine for your towing requirement the 4.10 was a must and the autoride will help. I got my Avalanche equipped the same way, it is on a suburban chassis. Good luck with your new burb....

Just pulled a 10,000 lb. boat/trailer from Miami to Chicago with a V10 Excursion. Did not use overdrive at all. Pulled like a dream. In the mountains I could keep up with the semi-trucks up hill at about 50mph in the worst part. Did not want to floor up hill it though. Cruised 75 mph at will. I averaged about 8 mpg. I was getting 9 mpg in Florida and and as low as 7 when I got into the 10 degree temps up north. I had a F250 powerstroke that is somewhat better for towing, just a real pain in the butt dealing with a diesel.

MACK312, We have a yukon xl Denali with the 6.0 litre, we tow about 10350 pds of equipment from Mississippi to Florida. The (Suburban) is only rated at 9300 but pulls it with no problem, also stops ok, the k&n and Hypertech programmer also helps. I,like Thunder Dan is having a boat built and over long distances I would say his Powerstroke diesel Excursion would be better suited for our 11000 application. I will be pulling this also about 20hrs with my Yukon xl but am waiting for an Avalanche or Yukon xl with the Duramax and allison. Enjoy your new vehicle, good choice.
