Hey guys I was looking at the motor for the boat the other day and noticed that they pan gasket had just a little bit of oil around it. Not dripping but there was oil, so I figure while the motor is out that I would drop the pan and put a new gasket in there. I am also going to drop the oil pump and put a new one of those in. I will weld on the oil pick up. I know that the pan gasket on a Gen 6 motor is a one piece, am I sapposed to use any silicone on the rubber gasket? If so were? Also any recomendations on putting in a new rear main seal? I figure that way any others that go bad can easily be fixed in the boat.

Audiofn.. I use permatex #2 on the pan gaskets and never have a problem. I'm sure others do something different, but this works great for me. I would definately replace the rear main. It is cheap insurance and I find I am usually more meticulous than who ever assembled the engine last. I think it was you I suggested earlier to check a couple bearings for condition, and all (mains and rods) for torque, because that is what I was going to do. Well I did that on mine. The mains were fine.. 110 each. The rods checked in at between 35 and 40 ft-lbs!!! Way bad, supposed to be 73ft-lbs. They musta thought the 7/16 bolts were the 3/8"? The guy I bought the boat from f..ed this up major. That is probably why the other engine (brand new) blew during my sea trial. He had recently rebuilt both.
That all is probably not the case for you, but if you are going that far in...
Moral to the story is; until I go over it, I don't know it is right. My stuff rarely lets me down with this approach.
