About 2 years ago, CheckmateF1 had his HP500 Carb rebuilt by the now wanted Bruce Dudley.

Regardless of the fact Bruce and his motor building practices were both crap; Eric/CheckmateF1 and Bruce did try about 5 different flame arrestors on his ~565HP motor. The K&N flame arrestor did make the most HP, and that is what was chosen for install on the boat.

Depends on the stock arrestor and engine. On the 496 HO there is no benefit other than filtering the air and a slightly better sound since you won't hear the hiss of the intake.

Unless you are on the Dyno I think variables to the airflow will effect jetting. If the stock arrestor was a restriction and as a result you were running fat and the K&N was less restrictive and tended to lean you out some it would show more power. Take the converse and apply the same logic. Some filter bases will straighten airflow and help direct it into the venturis etc. but to have a controlled experiment you would need to control the variables such as A/F ratio. Probably only a gnats arse anyway but there would seem to be a benefit to long term power by having clean air in the engine. Ever find dust or tree hair on top of your intake? Where did the rest of it go?
