Hint-lighter oils are easier on the pump (longer motor life, faster speed)

I believe that is what merc supplies. It came in a very small bottle (about the size of the heat bottles for gas) and was very thin. It was clear with a slight amber tint.

Yes, and it works better in colder temps.

i use hydraulic bottle jack fluid if i want it to go really fast. if i need it to go slow i use 10 w 30. plain old engine oil is what is recommended. but the lighter fluids (as in earlier post) work much better!

How about automatic trans fluid. Any good?

trans fluid works as well. i use trans fluid in the integral trim units. I do notice that it bubbles up easily. they (fluids) all seem to work well you just have to be cautious as to what type of fluid you use. i imagine there are a few that would be bad on the orings in the pumps.
