Default Oil temp sender - alarm and gauge

I just put my oil temperature gauge in and ran the boat the other day. Even after a few hard runs, it seemed like the oil never got up to temp. I'm thinking it was because I didn't disconnect the wire that goes to the alarm. Would this cause the reading to be low? The sender is on the block where the hoses to the remote oil filter are. Is there somewhere better for this sender?

My oil temp sender is on the remote oil filter housing right above the in hose.
