Default Need help with proper thermostat housing gaskets install

Ok, I pulled and chucked the old thermostats and gaskets last fall when winterizing. now i bought new.

when i looked on the mercruiserparts.com site at the illustration, there is a sleeve that i don't have for either engine. and I have a question on which of the gaskets to use . there is one with an open sware notch, and one closed. the illustration seems to show the closed tab (check valve type action??) can anyone explain the proper location and function of the gaskets, and also to confirm, cause i have no memory. the spring goes down into the intake manifold for thermostat right?

see graph posted next by waterfoul

this is my (old stype) setup

thanks Cord,

can't have any blue ooze showing though

but the main question is the gasket with the square flange. use the one that blocks the area off, as demonstrated in the illustration, or the one with the cutout.

and the cork goes on top of the thermostat, not under it?

and the thermostat spring points down??

and the cylinder , what's that for?

I wanna go boating too, help me out buddies

thanks everyone for all your help.

I should have posted......
" my Apache with 600sc's needs help with thermostat housing"

just kidding.

anyway. found my answer by other means for anyone else.

the gasket with two small brass gromets is used when the temp sending is on the housing, this makes ground contact assured

the cork gasket goes above the thermostat, not below,

the thermostat spring points down

the top gasket with square tab "cutout" is used when the top cap is old version (has square bypass casted in) the non cutout tab used when there is no bypass cast in the top cap.

Thanks. I plan to install new gaskets next week, and like you threw the old out last fall. While you didn't get much help from the board, I appreciate your post.
