Broke a TRS
Running last night at WOT in flat water and had a TRS let loose. No evidence of hitting anything, no dings on prop or drive.
Drive shop today showed me that the lower vertical shaft sheared off right inside the lower bearing race. I just had the lower gears replaced in the same drive last fall, just before putting it away. That time, I just had a tooth come off the lower gear set, and it was still working, just thumping alot.
Is this type of shaft failure fairly normal? I'd like to understand what failed, such as the gear failure weakened the drive shaft, or possibly it wasn't assembled right. My guy has been in the drive business since before TRS's went into production, so I'd like to believe he knows what he's doing. He tells me he sets the gear preload with .003" clearance. Anything else he should be looking for?

O.K. I'm trying this for the third time cause we got major T-storms here and the power keeps going out before I can get this posted. Don't blame your rebuild guy. That stuff happens. Have him do it again and Cryo-Treat EVERTHING!! After serveral failiers with my TRS, putting in 600+ HP five yrs. ago, I Cryo-Treated, assembled VERY carefully to factory specs., and ran on Amsoil 75/90 series 2000 "race" gear oil. No problems and I don't even have a hint of metallic fuzz on the magnet at the annual gear oil change. THIS DOES WORK! --- Jer

I'm with ya on this weather, I've lost power 3 times in two days.
Cryo-treating sounds like a pretty specialized gig. Is there somewhere in the Detroit area to get it done? I need the boat for next weekend, and I'm afraid time isn't on my side. My parts will be in on Monday, and I should have it running by the middle of the week. If I could get a cryo job turned around in a day or so, I would consider it.

The "crush" ring does NOT cause TRS failier. This came up a few months ago here. If you don't believe me, ask Marc at BAM Marine. He really knows this stuff...It's his living! And the Cryo-Treat process does take some time cause it's an extreme lowering then raising of temp. over a period of time and back to room temp. I know this is a big weekend coming up but I just don't think I'd put it together without having it done. One weekend riding with a buddy isn't as bad as the breakdown, the tow job, the expense, and the lay-up time later. --- Jer

I did'nt see any posts about crush washers here, but I dont spend as much time here as I used to . I had my drives done by Speedmasters Its his living too.
I've got 800 hp and 767lbs torque. Had both trans done also and I dont have any problems. Sorry I missed the thread on this, I've heard all the different versions.
