Default LWP and Strainers

Looking for some feedback.
Is it necessary or should I say recommended to incorporate a Sea Water Strainer when using a low water pickup on your outdrive?
Is there more of a tendency to ingest sand and crap when using a low water pickup?
This year will be the first time I have owned a drive (IMCO lower) with a low water pickup.
As always, any replies are appreciated.

Default Re: LWP and Strainers

I would say "yes" on the strainer for LWP. Depends on the waters you boat in.
You would be surprised on the crap the strainer picks up, if you boat in some nasty water.
I am currently using Eddie Marine's HP strainer, but the Gil unit is more economical, and is just as good (had 2 of the Gils in my previous boat).
"Too Old" w/ Trick Marine sells the Gils for a really great price.
Just need to size the strainer to your power, the Gils are probably good for motors of 500's or less. Not sure for those guys with big power.
I installed two recently on a pair of 500's, and it's pretty straight forward. Most of the plumbing items you need can be purchased from a plumbing supply house, and the 1 1/4" hose from boatersworld or boatus.
