You cant just torque the retainer nut. You tighten it to set bearing preload on the prop shaft. Using a new crush sleeve, you tighten till you measure 8-12 in/lbs with new bearings and 5-8 in/lbs with used bearings. If you tighten too much, then a new crush sleeve is needed. You can cheat and use a shim from the old style cases (1988) and setup proceedure, but it is easier to just buy a new crush sleeve. Merc calls them load rings. PN 67440T...
