Default what type of batteries to use

I just replaced the 12V house battery with a deep cycle. First time out afetr replacing the battery the other battery that is used to start the starboard motor wouldn't keep a charge. I had to parrallel the batteries to get it started. After starting it I turned off the parrallel switch back to normal, but then noticed my captains call turned on by itself and wouldn't let me turn it off. I think it's all related to the second battery which currently is a 12V acid battery (Not a deep cycle). I can't find any spec's in the manuals. Any suggestions?
