496HO and the Whipple….
I am seriously considering installing a Whipple kit on my good friends 496HO.
I’m just curious if anyone has done this, witnessed it or heard anything good or bad about it.
I have heard that the pistons can be a weak link in this setup but I have never really heard anyone that has actually experienced this. All I have heard is very good results with the Whipple and even the ProCharger setup for this motor.
I’m looking to set it up for 5.5 lbs at our high elevation (5000 feet) and ~3 lbs at lower elevations (<1000 feet) for longevity. I’m assuming the re-programmed ECU won’t care because this would actually look about the same to the MAP sensor if set up like this.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Dave

Re: 496HO and the Whipple….
I called Whipple last week because I was interested in Whipplecharging my 496 Mag HO. I explained that I would be upgrading to forged pistons and inconel exhaust valves, but that I was limited to running 89 octane gas based on what's sold on the water where I boat. I asked if I could lower the compression with the new pistons and/or have the ECM reprogrammed to accommodate this requirement. I was told no. I would have to run 91 octane and adding octane booster to the gas is not acceptable. So, I checked Whipple off my list. Doesn't answer your question about real-world experience, but may be useful information.

I installed 3.5 prochargers on my 2001 353 fastech w 496ho
Picked up 13 gps mph Still playing with the props....friend of mine installed the 5 lb kit on his 353 and picked up 20mph he has over a summer of serious abuse on his and no issues.......the thing I liked about prochargers is they are intercooled and you can run WOT longer.... both of us did not do any ecm upgrades all settings are stock mercury.
