Default Bravo hesitation when shifting into gear????

What would cause a newer style Bravo to pause 5-6 seconds before engaging. No noise or anything, just eventually goes into gear.
My friends boat is starting those symptoms and I have known of four others that have blown shortly after these symptoms. Mine was one of them
Any ideas?
Dave

Dave,
Does it do that every time? Or everynow and then? Have you looked at the linkage. Disconnect the cable from the shifter and shift it with just the bracket cable going to the drive. If it is properly adjusted, the cable should move equally from center to forward and reverse.
I have a modified drive that someone removed material from the shift fork cams and it would do the same thing. It worked fine for almost a year and then I had to shift it into gear befor the motor idled down and it did it until I replaced the fork.
The distance the cone clutch needs to travel inorder for it to seat on the gear face and squish the oil out so it can lock in, has to be sufficent enough for the process to happen. Another thing to look at is the clutch ribbed surface. Are they flattened? Is the taper in the gear damaged?
It sounds like it it time to do a tear down and look things over, before it breaks!

Good luck, hope this helps some.
Dick

My BMax drive does the same thing ,Sometimes when ya put it in reverse it does not engage. or takes awhile.you can feel the shifter going full travel like its going in far enough . the ajustment doesent help.
You have to anticipate it if you don't want to hit the dock or trailer.I wonder if it has something to do with the 5 inch gears??

Nordic;

AHH, the infamous "mystery shift". When they do this they are definately getting ready to let loose, although I'm not an expert as to why. Get her off and the upper gone through.

If this is happening in both forward and reverse I would think this eliminates the cable issue. Correct?
Is this built in replacement value for Merc???
