There are many factors that affect the stress on the drive. We have to take into account in what kind of water the boat is used. We don't like to put 5 blade props on boats with standard prop shafts when used in rough water.

The positive side of a 5 blade is that there is less vibration which is less stressful on an outdrive. 5 blades generally get on plane better than 4 blades so there is less stress on the drive when getting on plane. 5 blades stay hooked up better in choppy water, the 4 blade tends to let loose before a 5 blade thus causing more stress than a 5 blade prop.

Overall I think the drives seem to last longer with a 5 or 6 blade prop than a 4 blade due to the above reasons, especially with bigger power.

jdnca1- Not real sure how high, I will ask him when I see him. I want to say he is above or even with the bottom. I know that he had to go & add thru hull water intakes since the shorty drives did not let him get any water once on plane at any speed above 30. He did before & now even more so of blowout coming on plane. He has NO problem getting the front up. Most times he has bow too high

I suspected there would be a water pick-up problem thats why I haven't tried a loaner set yet. Looks like I've found my first winter project!

I'm trying both the p-5's this weekend and the p-5x's during the week on a 28 Daytona 625 Hp motors with extension boxes and a high x-dimension. I will post results as I get them. I'm running 34 stock Bravo-1's right now, the best top speed I've seen is 114 (GPS) so we'll see.

Devin,
Let me know how the props work and also let me know before you run up to WI. I have a prop to send back with you. I am currently trying a P5X 27" on my cat. 112 MPH is the best I have seen with the 30 labbed Bravo and 115+ is my goal. I am trying the prop at current drive height and 2" higher. We shall see how it does and make a decision which way to go from there.

Wet, Unless you were a long way from the rev limiter with the 30, you will need to go at least to the 29

I agree with the shorty I will probably need to re-prop, but at least I can get a handle on if the boat will even plane off with the P5X and the shorty. Plus with my rev limit set at 6800 there is a good possibility If the boat planes OK the speed at 6500 - 6600 will be in that 115 area with the P5X. I have a lot of experimenting to do, but that is what it takes to get it right!!

I just started using P5X on my tripple fountain, These are replacing some Bravo 30's which were too much for my application. I am using 27" P5X. So far they are great. Now the 30's wer not right as I could only get about 4700 RPM out of them and about 76 MPH. The 27's now are turning about 5200. I have not banged the limiter yet but only have 2 runs on them. My 3000 rpm MPH was about 50 with the B1 30's and 48-49 with the P5's. Getting up on plane seemed quicker but I did not time it. I think they offer the best of both worlds, faster midrange better hole shot and similar top end. It would be interesting to put them up agianst 28 p bravos but I only had 30's.

Wet - what is your X. My propshaft is 1/2 above the lowest part of the outside sponsons. I do not have any problems at all planing with the p5x. When my drive was 2" lower with labed 30 I had little blowout after boat brokeover, & it was same with the higher drive height.

this just in... 29 p5x CUSTOM labbed by tom at hydromotive

2001 35 playboy cig... 4000 rpm cruise 63.7 mph top end 84 mph
a labbed 30 bravo 1 was 59 mph and 81 mph the playboy is heavy though and i think the 5 get the nose up more which is needed,
on shorter lighter boats the gain may not be as great
i tried no labbed 30 4blades from tom and saw 83.1 if ilabbed thoughs i think i would have been at 85 but lost some cruise speed
