Merc vs. Volvo??
I still have not yet decided which way I should go with the re-power but I have one more question to ask...I may have come across a good deal on a brand new Volvo motor and drive (six year warranty and all). They say in the specs 420HP...since I have a Volvo duo-prop set up now I am considering this route. The question is, will a volvo 420HP duo-prop give me the same or about the same results as any other 420HP range motor?? This may be a stupid question but I have to ask...

I assume that you're talking about a 496/8.1? If so, both companies use pretty much the same basic package as a starting point, and just add their own accessory packages (water pumps, manifolds, etc.)

Re: Merc vs. Volvo??
The 496-8.1 Volvo is the same engine as the Merc 496HO. The only difference is in the ECM. The merc uses thier own and the Volvo uses a MEFI 3 or 4 depending on the year motor. The duoprop drive is a little stronger than a standard Bravo but depending on the drive ratio it will be just slightly slower top end due to dual props, but a little stronger out of the whole thru midrange. Some of the Volvo 496-8.1s are raw water cooled while all the Merc 496's are closed cooling. If the deal is really right it might be a good deal, but I would have someone engine knowledgeable check compression, etc. Buying someone elses problems will not be a good deal!
