![Question](/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
Hi guy's I had a milkshaked motor, tore it down looking for the trouble. My question is does anyone know if the engine has 2 thermostats , 1 in the intake manifold and another in the top of the very top of the inlet stack where all the hoses connect? thats how this was set up by previous owner, has edelbrock alum intake. seems funny to me to have 2 stats

that thermostat is put in incorrect, itcomes up from the bottom, into the housing, cork gasket goes in 1st.,then 140 thermostat 2nd,then sleeve 3rd, with the brass pellet pointing down.never does the thermostat go in the intake, this is a common mistake, and never are there 2-thermostats in a mercury marine engine.with your current set-up backpressure would be very high and could cause blown headgaskets, intake leaks, and severe overheating.hope tis helps .

thanks for your input guy's as I said I thought it was strange, but being unfamilier with marine engines I had to ask. I had looked for part numbers and drawings of the 454 setup and saw no thermostat in the intake. Maybe thats part of the problem causing the milkshake huh? I have twins so I better remove the other stat from the other motor if it has one, I'd better look. While I'm on here I have another question, I'm about to put the top end back together with new felpro gaskets. I had learned that the edelbrock alum intake needs a less rigid gasket ,which I have, to put it back together. The one I took out was very rigid. After cleaning and having the heads checked I see they have one square port surrounded by small narrow long ports in the center of the head. After placing the intake manifold to the head I notice that the intake frame work or top rail above the bolt pattern of the intake does not cover the long horizontal port ,top of the center square, only the the gasket will cover it. Is that normal? To me it doesn't seem like it would be sealed off? what does that long port do can it be sealed off?
