Default Gash in lower unit gear housing

Hit a shallow spot pretty hard this summer, took a gash out of the side of the lower unit gear housing. Not all the way through, no internal damage, but is there any way the gash can be filled in with a metal or something without having to replace the entire housing? No real problem yet just looks bad and incase I want to sell I might want to look at trying to fix it up. If I have to replace the entire housing I'll live with it. Thanks for the reply.

If its just cosmetic sand it down and fill it with aluminum all metal, sand flat and re-paint. If it looks like your close to punching thru then you could have a skilled welder fill it in,around here our local prop guy welds skegs back on,right on the boat!Smitty

Thanks Smitty. I think I'll take it to a shop and see if they think it's close to punching through. Is there a general thickness on them? I have an Alpha gen 2, maybe I'll try and see if there's any specs on it. Maybe I can have a good welder fill it in for a reasonable price. Thanks again.

Marine tex (grey) works wonders. Just a thought.

definitely marinetex or 2-part Devcon "aluminum putty".

Both are "structural grade" repair materials.
No heat necessary.

Chazzz- If this were a boat you really wanted to buy and it had this damage, how would YOU want it repaired? If it's as deep as you described and it's not right next to a seal, I'd have it welded. I had a 1/2"X 1/2" notch in the lead edge of the skeg on one of my SpeedMasters. I backed up to the door of a welding shop and they TIG welded and ground it down while I waited. I think I gave the guy $50. Your call.
