Default Gen 5 cyl head gasket mis match

After I pulled the heads on my gen 5's, I noticed a water passage on the far left that is covered by the gasket. There is a matching passage in the head. The gasket is a Felpro 17048. Should I open the gasket up?

Do not open that up. It is blocked on purpose to make the water flow to the end of the block. If you open it up, water will short circit the head by coming in the water pump inlet & and right out the intake manifold outlet.

Ian, why all the soot on your pistons? It's been a while since I've been inside an engine, but is that normal?

That looks like a normal amount of carbon to me. Better a little black then brown or white.
