New blocks? Sallee Chevrolet seems to be a favorite.

Used ones, I have a 454 (2000 7.4 MPI) that needs #1 cyl. sleeved. Still has crank, rod's, pistons although #1 piston is scrap. It's a 7.4 so you may not care about the cast rotating assbly anyway. It had about 250 fresh water hours on it when a valve dropped. #1 piston didn't fair so well, neither did the cylinder wall.

You can build a 496 out of your 454. I used JE pistons, H beam rods and the biggest mistake was a eagle crank which after it was remachined worked out fine. The heads I used where merlin which have been replaced again with stock 454 mag heads by a friend of mine who now owns the motor.

did you have problems with the merlin heads?? I have a set of them as well and i was debating on using the on the 540 that I want to build. I would like to find a proven setup that I can build this winter. Around the 625-650hp with no blower.

The problem was I bought 345 intake runners which with the compression I was running turned out to be to much. The new owner had the 454 shaved down to raise it which after one season his engine builder believes the stock heads are to small and they want to buy the Merlins and shave them down. The motor is going on a dyno in the next few weeks and they believe it will be 700 to 750hp. The combo I had with the heads and mild cam was around 550hp.
