Has anybody ever run one of the Merlin crate motors in their boat? I am considering a low cost alternative on repowering this winter. I was thinking of buying a pair of the 509ci 540hp motors and putting some marine carbs on and trying to use them. Was wondering if anyone has done the same or had any thoughts or experience with these motors. Thanks in advance.

No experience with them but i found it amusing that teauge marine started selling them for their customers on a budget about a year ago and six months ago their ad changed to say "no warranty" on same motor for same price,i wonder if someone had problems with them, you might want to call teauge,Smitty

Do a search and I think you'll find some info. In my memory I don't think they are too good. Check out www.1800runsnew.com

Teague is the only distributor of the marinized version.Good value for buck but I would tear it down.Crate motors miss a lot of attention to detail.I tend to think of them as a box of parts loosly assembled.

I was kind of thinking of tearing them down and having all the clearances and what not checked. Even having to do that, it should still be a cost effective way to get 540hp.

I ordered one unassembled from world products that was supposed to be ready to put together. After checking the balance and using a mic on the motor I realized it was not such a good buy after all. I machined everything to were it should be and motor ran well. However, I would not of just wanted to assemble it and run it because I could see why Teague would discontinue warranty on that motor.
