Jim: Call Mercury Racing (# on Merc. web-site), and ask them to fax you the blueprint for the Scorpion engine. You can then call the regular Merc. line and they'll probably be able to send you the drawings for your old motor. I swapped out a 350 mag for a 496HO and got all kinds of incorrect info. on dimensions(including off the Merc website), and could not clarify the changes until I finally got the blueprint drawings. Merc. was very helpful, sent the drawings within 5 minutes and they were accurate to half inch.

If you've got the space for a big block, why not go to the 496HO? Cheaper and more torque, although slightly heavier of course. Good luck.

I don't want to build an engine cause I don't want to deal with the crap that comes with doing that. Evidence this particular forum. I 'd rather pay up and drop it in and have a warranty worth something if something goes wrong. I don't have the tools, the patience or desire to build an engine or trust someone else to do it for me. I just want to run it, flush it, and put it away til next time. Thanks for the sueggestions though.

Bounced cheque, That's a good idea, I think I will do just that. I would love to go with a 496 but I have to mate it with an alpha ss. So it presents a problem until I break the alpha ss. I will probably end up going witha 350 mag if the 377 scorp won't fit.

Some of the early 20 cigs did not have a full bulkhead in front of the motor and might have more space, but I asume an 85 would have the full bulkhead. Got any skiboat dealerships nearby that might have a 377 in it that you could take your own measurements?

Not that I don't trust Mercruiser, because they are always looking out for our best interests, and would never, ever, have a mistake in thier literature..............

That sounds even funnier now that I wrote it..........

Thanks Eddy. Tuesday, We pull the old tired 350. Then my glass/paint guy said he would start freshening up of the bilge in early Jan. LOL We'll see when we really start.

I certainly would not like to pay merc list prices. Sometimes you can find off current year motors still in the factory crates. ie leftovers.
