Default Velvet drive (C-72) Transmission conversion

I'm contemplating removing my extension box's, on my 38 Cigarette, ( using #5 SSM drives), and moving my gimbles back to the transom. At present, I'm using Huber driveline transmissions and a short drive shaft, to connect the motors to the drives. If I go w/o the box's, I will have to switch back to "plug-in" transmissions.
Does anyone know if it is as simple as removing the rear coupling from the drive line transmission and bolting on the #3-5 SSM plug-in tail stock, or are there internal modifications that must be done to the transmissions to make them plug-in's?
Anyone have a pair of tailstocks for #3-5 SSM transmissions?

You need to get 10-18-014 which is the tail stock tranny(TRS style). The housings are different from the coupler style to the plug in style. Pinion carrier assm. is different too,but w/ the 10-18-014 you'll get an added plate in REV.

This is great information. I've got plug-in Huber 1330's in my boat. I recall talking to Tom Huber once and I'd swear there's a tag riveted to my trannys that has 10-18-004 on it in addition to Tom's decal. This is the beauty of the OSO site, good honest information. Lou

Marinetrans,
Isnt the TRS plugin tailstock different from a SSM plugin tailstock?

As marinetrans says, the 2 trasmisisons are different, not possible to convert. Gary, as you pointed out the tailstocks are different TRS to 3-5, but the trans is the same.

However, there is a more significant issue. Unless your drives are exceptionally low on the transom most likely the boat will not like the 5's without the boxes.

I have a related question, but from a different angle.... I'm running BW 10-17-016's, and I'll be moving up to a 72 series this winter. I'm using TRS inner transom assy's, with a plug-in tailstock on my BW's.

Is the 10-18-014 what I'm looking for? I was assuming that I would use the tailstocks from my old trannies, as they are in good shape.

Thanks in advance,
Brian

P4-33, Yep thats the one. The 72c one is 1 inch longer than the 71c.So the fwd. engine mounts will have to moved 1 inch towards the bow.Souldn't mess w/ the tail pipes too bad.
