Piston rings cracking?

Re: Piston rings cracking?
Yea!! Interesting how motors tend to make their most HP and Torque right on the ragged edge of detonation. Drag racers really push the limit!!! If we try that with our boats we will have problems for sure!! My first experience with detonation was when I lost a center electrode on a spark plug on a 11.5:1 compression SBC about 12 years ago. I thought it was a faulty plug until it happened again on a different cylinder. Turned out to be not enough octane!!!

Let's not forget about improper installation.
Smoking a doobie during assembly has been known to cause a few too.

Re: Piston rings cracking?
Nah,,,,,,,,,like just being stupid with the ring compressor. Or maybe with the expander putting the rings on the pistons,,,,,,,,,,,,,fortunately, I haven't had that problem for a long, long, long time,,,,,,,,
My favorite is when I take an engine apart and look at the wear pattern on the rings to see if the previous engine assembler rolled the compression rings on the pistons, twisting the rings.

Re: Piston rings cracking?
Are they cracking or breaking? If it is the top ring then it is all of the above. detonation, poor fitting.. If it is the second then it can only be due to poor fitment.
In some rare cases where a few select jokers like to run the longest rod they can, you will develop ring problems when you bunch them together too tightly. this is because the piston will actually distort from excessive heat & lack of meat (you know what I mean) causing the rings to shift. in this case they don't crack, they just break.
