question on heads and cam choice
I am building a 454 stroked to 496. I have a small b&m blower and steeling headers. I would like to see 600 plus horses. I have a set of open camber heads laying around. what cam and head combination would best for project on a budget. the pistons are rated at 9 to 1 up to 10.5 to 1 depending on heads. I would like to learn as much as possible I made mistakes last time.

Re: question on heads and cam choice
small blower? how small? Hopefully it's a 250. The smaller ones won't give you the 600 you are after (or at least won't be happy doing it).
250 blower. 850 Holley.
119cc heads (large ovals or rectangles), unshroud the valves, a little bowl work.
.040 squish
Crane 731.
5 psi boost.
32 degrees timing.
You should be over 600.

Re: question on heads and cam choice
the 731 cam is only good til 5400 rpm's,when i had a 250 on my engine the best cam for the buck in my opinion is the cam that b&m say's to use part # 90767.my engine is a 9-1 and i run 7 psi of boost on pump gas for 4 years now,i put the 741 in and after buying all the roller crap it's still about the same as the hyd.flat tappet they say to use.heads are flowed stock 118cc rec port.timing @ 30*.hp don't know but it pushes my 26' sonic 85 mph on gps @5800 w/a labbed 28 pitch, not enough so i put a 420 mega blower on top, then it snowed, well a couple more months and will see how much more speed i get.
