Opinions on painting / coating aluminum swim platform
I want to have my aluminum swim platform redone and I am not sure how to accomplish it. It is in good overall shape, with just a few minor chips, but it is rather dull and I was thinking of changing the color. It is currently purple and I am considering changing it to lime green if I can get a color match from the graphics. With that color in mind, I assume that powder coating is out.
What kind of finish is on there now, is it paint? If it is powder coat, I thought it would be thicker and stronger.
Also, where do I buy new non-skid tape like what is on there now?
Thanks,
Bill

Hey Bill, I just got a quote from a powdercoat shop here in town to redo mine (just like yours). Sandblast and powder coat the platform in any color for 200 bucks. I thought that was reasonable. Check around, it's prob not as bad as you think.!

Extreme Marine does most of (all of?) Baja's swim platforms. I've ordered replacement non-skid from them for my platform, about $20 bucks or so. They can probably re-powder coat it for you, too, but shipping these things can't be cheap. A local PC shop might be your best bet.
I keep mine shiny with Penetrol. It soaks in and brightens up faded powder coating. My exhaust dumps on top of mine, so it's a constant battle, but it does the job. Try to keep the Penetrol off the vinyl non-skid.

P.S. You'd be surprised at the color ranges offered by powder coat shops... literally hundreds. I'll bet they have 5-6 different shades of lime green.
It's powder coated now... if you're going to change colors I'd suggest powder coating it again. PC is 10 times stronger than paint if the aluminum is prepped right.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will go to a powder coat shop and see what they have to offer. I tried to color match my lime green with some vinyl I wanted to cover my air vents with. It was close, but ended up making the lime green on the boat look like crap. If I can get it done and have it match for $200 like Madmax, I'm in. I have removed the bow rail and stripped the powder coat off of it using paint remover. I was going to have it redone in white, but I may have to really gaudy it up with more lime green if I can find a color match.
