I'm running a single and I have a set of custom fit Lightning exhaust due to the fact that my engine is in back-wards (Arneson Drive). How much taller is the tall deck???

540 with gm heads can make about 600-650hp and a 572 should make about 650-700hp.my short deck 540 same head makes 630.

A short deck 565 is a good compromise. 4.60 bore x 4.25 stroke.

z.z -

I have a 540 standard deck with GM Rect port heads , Dart single plane intake, 950HP, and Crane 741 cam. EMI 4" exhaust. I am at 600hp. What are you running to get 630hp? What RPM?

Crap no, the GM heads won't be choking at 5200. Those heads came from a high rpm background. In the old days, those heads were the hot ticket for a 7500 rpm 454.

It's got nothing to do with the heads being choked. The ports simply aren't as efficient as a modern head, and require a little cam duration to approach similar results. Because of that, the torque curve won't be as flat and the bottom end will be a little softer (when compared apples to apples with the same motor running Canfields or AFRs). It's all relative.
