So to revisit this thread...

I'm also considering doing something like this.

540 or 572?
What should be done to the rect port heads? yes, willing to throw money at them, but defeats the reasoning behind "cheap" if I buy a nicer flowing aftermarket set.

What's a good recipe (intake, cam, carb) for 550-600hp, using rect port heads.

I have Lightning headers on a 454 mag w/flat cam lobe, looking to either rebuild, or do the above.

Going in a 21 foot boat, so anything over 500 hp is gonna get scary.

Thanks in advance.

Have the exhaust ported to get the I/E ratio closer to 80% instead of the 65 % they have stock,Smitty

21' what ? could be a death trap. A 496 might be more than enough.

Nah,
210 Hallett, they run em all day long on the ski race circuit at 90mph. Saw a twin turbo, 1100hp version a few weeks back.

I was thinking about doing a blower motor (rebuild the 454), but don't want the hassle.

It seems the 540/572 shortblock from Dyno-Flow is a pretty good price; get my rect. port heads done, new manifold and bigger carb and I have some decent reliable ponies?

I'm not a wrench, but have a couple of guys who are, or even take it over to Dugans machine shop for assembky.

I have the Lightnings and all other components.

I'm gearing up to ask the infamous question....WHAT CAM?

Sell the 454 complete, buy some good heads, you might as well build a 598 it would cost about the same. What's the ID on your headers ?

Go as big as you can within your budget. Nothing worse than running it a couple of times and thinking "I should of went bigger". As stated earlier a tall deck is .400" taller than your 454 and some aftermarket heads have raised exhaust ports. Both of these could impact your headers depending on where they exit your hull. As for a cam your boat is pretty light so you can get away with a pretty healthy stick, make great top end power and not notice the slight trade off on the low end. The cam selection will depend on the heads you choose and the compression, among other things. I run a 10:1 598 with 355 CNC Darts with a solid roller cam in a 23' cat and it has more than enough power to keep me smiling. Good luck!
