Default Inner and outer Transom plate bad pitting

I think I found my leak!

At first I was thinking marine tex... now I'm thinking a welder needs this job? Would it also be okay to weld a plate where the exhaust goes? I'll never use it and I never want to worry about that leaking.

if youre talking about welding a plate on the inner transom plate where you would normally bolt the exhuast block off plate that would be fine. make sure whoever welds that grinds out enough material to get to solid metal though.

Looks you have electrolysis porblem--and a bad case. Suggest you check bonding and grounding systems to make sure they are intact or problme is goin g to reappear not get better.

jackhammer,
Are you using any sacrificial anodes or a Mercathode Impressed current system? I would also make sure that you have as many pieces grounded together as you can.
You may be better to start over with a new inner and outer transom plate.

I plan to keep this boat trailered for the rest of it's life... the longest it would be in the water at one time is 2 days (overnight). Do I really need to have a working mercathode system for this?

Mercathode system is proably optional--but bonding system is essential. Stray current in marina destrayed outdrives and gimles in month !!!

Volvo has jst announced a mercathode like system alse--seems easier to install and maintain.

As Poorsche said and I mentioned before the bonding and anodes is minimum.
