In 2001 dry pits were at the speedway. Then a police escort to New Smyrna Airport and we craned in race day at The Swoop Power Plant. Nice ride from there , trhough the inlet and then north to the race course. It was a great , rough water race. Many broken bones , boats and backs. I remember Nigels navigator hurt his back and they chunked him out , kept going. Yahoo smoked the super cat fleet until he hurt his back. Curtis also won the SCL race earlier in the day. The Velocity F2 guy's got hurt and had to idle back to the Coast Guard Station. Johnny T said it was the roughest race of his career. Ahhhhhhh the memories. Oh yea I got 2nd out of 18 F1 Boats. Just bought the Joker molds and my F1 debut , not bad for a starving Georgia redneck!

Dont remember who, but I remember a full size van full of partying offshore racers decided to take a late-nite lap around the speedway....I think they were caught by turn 3 and escorted out.....funny stuff.
I ran there and did the Richard Petty driving expierence as well it was great. 12 driving laps the last 6 at 160+ Next day offshore racing. Brutle water for the small boat i had.

It's funny too, I was in Daytona this summer and it seemed like the whole place was asleep. It feels like they just let the place idle till Bike Week or Race weeks. I used to live there when I was a kid and it always seemed to hop. Admittedly the logistics of a race there would be a bear but it would be a great venue with all the speed history. Maybe just do a short course in that lake in the infield, 1 class at a time all day long like a hydro race

I believe Daytona folded after Jack S got killed in the F2 race. Sort of freaked out the local politicians when the Press started trying to place blame.
It was a great location for a race.

We've race in Daytona two times F2 in 2002, it was in 2003 racing on Saturday in P3 that Jack Stoerrle our throttlemen was killed. Sunday's race the F2 Team Fisher Donzi flipped both were ok, a second incident that Sunday with In-M' Ocean Again that both men were taken to the hospital. I'm sure that the anxiety level and the emotions that come with losing a fellow racer that weekend were high for the APBA officials, the racers and the city of Daytona Beach. I was unaware of the local politicans worry about who's to blame issue. I really don't think that Jack's death had anything to do with the politics of going back to Daytona Beach. Jack had attend AMI in Daytona Beach and gradute in 1979 and lived his dream in the Marine Industry. Will just have to see if Daytona Beach shows up again on a race scheldue in the future.
