Key West Clarification
The Offshore Super Series Powerboat Racing Association is posting this information as a clarification to the Offshore Community in regards to the recent confusion on the dates for our World Championship races.
In December, 2003, OSS was contacted by the Conch Republic Offshore Powerboat Racing Association, inquiring about the possibility of hosting a World Championship event for OSS in Key West for November 2004. Their proposal to us included a joint event with SBIP.
OSS considered the requests of the offshore community, the racers, and the offshore industry for a united World Championship event.
On February 11, 2004, OSS and SBIP signed a letter of intent to produce a combined World Championship event with CROPRA as the organizers and local promoters. CROPRA set the dates of November 8th - 14th, 2004.
CROPRA, as the organizers created a proposal on behalf of OSS and SBIP to submit to tourism officials for funding and permits which will be officially voted on April 7, 2004.
On February 25, 2004 OSS received a request from CROPRA, to move the dates to November 14 - 21, 2004 as this date was better for the Coast Guard and the community of Key West.
OSS responded on February 26, 2004, that we would be happy to choose a date that fits best for CROPRA and Key West.
What the above means:
Permitting and funding processes for cities and waterways takes months of presentations, planning, and sometimes several votes from governmental bodies.
It is our understanding from CROPRA that no one, including any other organization, officially has funding or permits until April 7th, 2004 when the vote is taken.
The above information is exactly why the OSS created a policy to post its race dates when they are Officially Official. OSS will continue on its path of professionalism in regards to this matter. Therefore when you see an event posted on the OSS schedule, it means the proper permits have been obtained and contracts for funding have been signed. The long term goal of OSS is to post a three year schedule beginning in 2005.
OSS will open its season in Biloxi, Mississippi on April 23, 2004.
We hope this posting clarifies the real information for our fans, racers and sponsors. OSS will not be able to respond to this post or answer questions regarding this post. It is meant for informational purposes only.
Thanks for your understanding & support!
