The Alabama Convention and Visitors Bureau along with the City of Orange Beach and local sponsors have agreed to capitalize and permit two offshore races. After considering proposals from SBI, APBA, and OSS they have decided to with SBI for both a May 2nd and August 22nd Race. The decision was based upon 2003 race experiences, and the fact that APBA and OSS are newly organized and do not have a track record as of yet. The Gulf Coast Powerboat Association has agreed to honor their decision. As we hope you are all aware, the Gulf Coast Powerboat Association has always been behind unification and has ties to all of the race associations. Certainly next year after everyone has a proven season all associations will be considered for our race venue. In any case most of you know that Orange Beach is hospitable and welcomes all race teams and associations. We are proud to be the kick-off venue for the Gulf Coast Gold Cup Championship series along with Ft. Myers, Sarasota, and another possible venue on the Gulf Coast. The Gold Cup series will be in addition to the races and attending racers will be awarded additional points. The Gold Cup Championship finals will be in Orange Beach in August with additional prize monies and trophies. We are very excited about the May and August race and are working on many festivities to enhance yours and the spectator's enjoyment during race week. Recently several new nightclubs and restaurants have opened here that everyone will enjoy!
Gary Nichols plans to run the SBI race circuit, 2 to 3 of the APBA and if OSS had a class he would do several with them. Gary also appreciates and values his recent friendship with Bob Bull and appreciates Bob's decision in November to support our race venue.
We wish Bob with APBA and Elaine with OSS a successful racing year. All race teams are welcome and we look forward to seeing everyone again!
